Case Summary

Ulysses Blackshear was convicted of malice murder and related offenses in the death of William Land. He challenged the sufficiency of the evidence and argued that counsel was ineffective for not objecting to autopsy photographs. The Georgia Supreme Court affirmed. The court held that the evidence supported each conviction and that counsel’s decision not to object to photographs showing injuries was reasonable trial strategy. The photographs were consistent with the defense effort to suggest that another person committed the killing, and similar evidence had already been admitted. Because the record supported the trial court’s findings on both performance and prejudice, Blackshear failed to establish ineffective assistance. The court rejected the remaining claims and left the convictions and sentences intact.
