Case Summary
Police officers responded to a 911 call about an intoxicated man who would not leave his former wife’s garage. During the encounter, Austin Bond’s decedent, Dominic Rollice, held a hammer and moved toward the officers, who shot and killed him. The Supreme Court reversed the denial of qualified immunity. It held that the officers did not violate clearly established Fourth Amendment law because the respondent had not identified precedent placing the unlawfulness of this conduct beyond debate under materially similar circumstances. The Court reversed the judgment of the Court of Appeals and ended the qualified-immunity claim.
