Case Summary
Atlanta officer Jon Grubbs tased 65-year-old homeless man Jerry Blasingame in the back as Blasingame fled along a roadside after taking money from a passing driver; the taser sent him down an embankment into a metal utility box. A jury found against Grubbs and awarded compensatory and punitive damages, while the district court entered judgment for the City. The Eleventh Circuit affirmed: the force was excessive under the circumstances, the City was not liable on the trial record, and the reduced punitive award against Grubbs remained within constitutional limits.
