Case Summary

Lorie Smith planned to create wedding websites and claimed that Colorado's public-accommodations law would compel her to express messages about same-sex marriage that conflicted with her beliefs. Colorado argued that the law permissibly prohibited discrimination by businesses serving the public. The Court held that the requested websites were protected expression and that Colorado could not compel Smith to create speech conveying a message she did not endorse. The Court therefore reversed the judgment against her.
