CivilEmploymentTitle VIIReligious AccommodationDiscrimination
Case Summary
Gerald Groff, an evangelical Christian postal worker, sought exemption from Sunday work as a religious accommodation. The lower courts treated an accommodation as an undue hardship if it imposed more than a minimal cost on the employer or coworkers. The Court rejected that formulation and held that Title VII requires an employer to show substantially increased costs in relation to the conduct of the particular business. The Court vacated the judgment and remanded for application of that clarified standard.
