Case Summary

Joseph Kennedy, a public-school football coach, briefly knelt and prayed at midfield after games. The school district directed him to stop, and the dispute reached the Supreme Court after the lower courts upheld the district's action. The Court held that Kennedy's quiet, personal prayer was protected religious exercise and that the district had not shown that allowing it would violate the Establishment Clause. The Court reversed the Ninth Circuit and remanded for proceedings consistent with that conclusion.
