Case Summary
Steven George Morgan was convicted of three drug-trafficking offenses after cocaine was smuggled from St. Maarten in shaving-gel jars. He challenged the warrantless search of his LG cellphone, the admission of statements about ownership and control, and several evidentiary rulings. The Eleventh Circuit majority affirmed, concluding that the phone search and statements did not require reversal and that the remaining errors, individually or cumulatively, did not undermine the verdict. Judge Rosenbaum dissented, reasoning that the warrantless phone search violated the Fourth Amendment and that Morgan's statement was involuntary.
