Case Summary

Gilbert Alexander Hill was convicted of trafficking heroin and fentanyl, possessing drugs with intent to distribute, possessing benzodiazepine and marijuana, and possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. The State’s evidence placed Hill in a mobile home where officers found drugs and guns, but the Court of Appeals of Georgia concluded that the evidence did not establish the necessary links between Hill and the contraband. The court emphasized that it could not reweigh the evidence or resolve credibility questions, yet the State still had to present evidence from which a rational factfinder could exclude reasonable hypotheses other than guilt. Comparing the record with cases involving stronger connections to a residence and its contents, the court held that unexplained and suspicious circumstances were insufficient. It reversed the judgment in its entirety.
