Hallv.Masters
A civilly committed detainee challenged disciplinary seclusion, alleged failures to provide disciplinary reports, seizure of electronic devices containing legal materials, and retaliation for prior lawsuits. The Eleventh Circuit upheld the order setting aside default and affirmed summary judgment on the access-to-courts theory because Hall did not identify a frustrated nonfrivolous legal claim. But his affidavit created genuine disputes concerning the duration and conditions of punishment, notice and process, and retaliatory statements allegedly made by officials. The court therefore vacated summary judgment on the affected claims and remanded for further proceedings.
