Case Summary

Jennifer Long was convicted of malice murder and first-degree cruelty to children in the death of her 18-month-old daughter. She challenged the sufficiency of the evidence and alleged that trial counsel failed to investigate medical evidence and develop a better defense. The Georgia Supreme Court affirmed. The court held that the evidence supported the verdicts and that Long had not shown what additional investigation would have uncovered or how it would have changed the result. Speculation that further medical research might have produced a different defense was insufficient to establish deficient performance or prejudice. The court rejected the remaining claims and left the convictions and sentences undisturbed.
