Case Summary

New York City formerly restricted licensed firearm owners from transporting firearms to second homes or shooting ranges outside the city. After the Supreme Court granted review of a Second Amendment challenge, New York amended its statute and the City amended its rule to permit the requested transportation. The Supreme Court held that the challenge to the old rule was moot because the requested relief had already been provided. The Court declined to decide whether the new rule allowed incidental stops for food, fuel, or restroom breaks because that dispute had not been resolved below and was not necessary to the mootness ruling. The Court remanded for the lower courts to consider any remaining claims under the amended rule. Justice Alito, joined by Justices Gorsuch and Thomas, dissented and would have held the old rule unconstitutional and ordered relief.
