Case Summary

A Dunkin’ Donuts customer argued with cashier Mekiah Bryant over a drive-through interaction and then stabbed her in the arm. Bryant sued her employer for premises liability and negligent security; the employer argued that the Workers’ Compensation Act’s exclusive-remedy provision barred the tort claims. The Court of Appeals held that the assault arose from Bryant’s cashier duties and a dispute generated by that work interaction, making the injury reasonably incident to her employment even though a customer inflicted the harm. It reversed and remanded with direction to enter summary judgment for the employer on the remaining tort claims.
