Case Summary
Donnel Rawls was convicted of malice murder and feticide in the killing of his pregnant girlfriend, Amber Beckwith. He challenged the evidence, hearsay concerning prior abuse, the jury instruction on flight, and counsel’s performance. The Georgia Supreme Court affirmed. The court held that the evidence supported the convictions and that any assumed error in admitting abuse-related hearsay or instructing on flight was harmless in light of the strong evidence. It also rejected Rawls’s ineffective-assistance claims and considered the asserted errors cumulatively. The combined effect did not deprive Rawls of a fundamentally fair trial.
