Case Summary

Eugenia Schell was convicted of malice murder and related offenses in the death of her mother, Willie Jo Vaughn. She challenged the sufficiency of the evidence. The Georgia Supreme Court affirmed. The court held that the evidence was sufficient under due-process principles and under Georgia’s statutory rule requiring the evidence to exclude reasonable hypotheses of innocence. The jury was entitled to resolve conflicts and assess the credibility of the witnesses. Schell therefore did not show that the verdicts lacked evidentiary support.
