Staleyv.State
Desmond Staley appealed convictions arising from an armed robbery in which the assailant pressed a handgun against the victim's stomach and searched his pockets. The Court of Appeals held that Staley's conduct before and during trial did not create a bona fide doubt requiring the court to order a competency evaluation sua sponte. It also upheld the admission of prior robbery, assault, and firearm convictions as other-acts evidence relevant to intent, rejected ineffective-assistance challenges to counsel's failure to pursue suppression of physical evidence and the photographic identification, and found no abuse of discretion in the victim's testimony concerning the weapon. Because Staley established no individual error, his cumulative-error claim also failed, and the convictions were affirmed.
