Case Summary

Randy Vana Haile and Mark Anthony Beckford were convicted after a DEA reverse-sting operation involving large quantities of marijuana and cocaine and an exchange of drugs for firearms. Haile and Beckford were convicted of drug conspiracy and attempt charges, and firearm offenses; Beckford also received a 438-month sentence that included a 30-year mandatory minimum for possessing a machine gun in furtherance of drug trafficking. The Eleventh Circuit affirmed Haile’s conviction. It also affirmed Beckford’s convictions on most counts and his sentence, rejecting challenges involving the machine-gun definition, an alleged outrageous-government-conduct defense, the Eighth Amendment, and sentencing-factor manipulation. The court held, however, that the indictment and evidence did not support Beckford’s conviction for knowing possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. It therefore reversed that Count 6 conviction. Because the Count 6 sentence ran concurrently with the others, the reversal did not change Beckford’s 438-month sentence. The court affirmed in part and reversed in part.
