Case Summary

A jury convicted Winston Watkins of aggravated child molestation and three counts of child molestation. After denying his motion for new trial, the trial court imposed a life sentence for aggravated child molestation and sentences for the remaining offenses. The Court of Appeals of Georgia affirmed the conviction-related rulings but vacated the sentences for the three child-molestation convictions. The court held that Georgia law required split sentences for those offenses and that the trial court had failed to impose the required imprisonment-plus-probation structure. The life sentence for aggravated child molestation remained undisturbed. The case was remanded for resentencing on the child-molestation convictions.
