George Washington (1732-1799) was the first President of the United States and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. He served as President from 1789 to 1797.

Washington was born on February 22, 1732 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He was the oldest of six children of Augustine Washington and Mary Ball Washington. Washington was educated at home and later attended a local school, where he studied mathematics, geography, and surveying.

In 1749, Washington became a surveyor and spent several years surveying land in Virginia and other parts of the colonies. In 1753, he was appointed a major in the Virginia militia, and in 1754 he was sent to the Ohio Valley to deliver a message to the French, who had established a fort in the area. This event led to the start of the French and Indian War, in which Washington served as a leader of the colonial forces.

After the war, Washington returned to Virginia and married Martha Dandridge Custis, a wealthy widow. He became active in Virginia politics and was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses. In 1775, he was appointed the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, and he led the American forces to victory against the British during the Revolutionary War.

After the war, Washington retired to his plantation at Mount Vernon. However, he was called out of retirement in 1787 to attend the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, where he was elected as the President of the Convention. In 1789, he was elected as the first President of the United States, and he served two terms in office.

After his presidency, Washington returned to his plantation at Mount Vernon. He is remembered as a great leader and a symbol of the American Revolution.
